Description
This beautiful almost black bowl has striking spots on the outside, and barely perceptible traces of the spots on the inside. This is the nature of metallic salt colours which diffuse into the bisque pots when applied. Each piece created in this process is unique and unrepeatable.
Often my work is driven by the materials and processes. Working with soluble metallic salts has been an ongoing investigation in my arts practice. Due to their unpredictable behavior, they are not commonly used in studio ceramics. Dissolved metallic salts are applied to the porous surface creating unique patterns on both surfaces. My concern is about the relationship between these surfaces, evidenced through the migration of colour and pattern. Applied acids and resists create crisp and diffuse patterns, defined by moisture and saturation.
