Description

This unique porcelain bowl is wheel thrown in porcelain and fired in reduction. It has been fired a total of four times to complete the surface layers. It is decorated with soluble salts and then layers of iron decals, then copper mica decals. Each piece created in this process is unrepeatable.

Often my work is driven by the materials and processes. Working with soluble metallic salts has been an ongoing investigation in my arts practice. Due to their unpredictable behavior, they are not commonly used in studio ceramics.  Dissolved metallic salts are applied to the porous surface creating unique patterns on both surfaces. My concern is about the relationship between these surfaces, evidenced through the migration of colour and pattern. Applied acids and resists create crisp and diffuse patterns, defined by moisture and saturation.
