Description
This vase has been wheel thrown with porcelain clay. Soluble metallic salts were applied at the bisque stage, and then it was reduction firing. Silver and platinum decals have been added giving subtle reflective highlights. Each piece created in this process is unique and unrepeatable.
Often my work is driven by the materials and processes. Working with soluble metallic salts has been an ongoing investigation in my arts practice. Due to their unpredictable behavior, they are not commonly used in studio ceramics. Dissolved metallic salts are applied to the porous surface creating unique patterns on both surfaces. My concern is about the relationship between these surfaces, evidenced through the migration of colour and pattern. Applied acids and resists create crisp and diffuse patterns, defined by moisture and saturation.
