This crater or lava series is all about texture. These vessels explore the use crater slips and glazes to create deep texture in the glaze surface. A reactive ingredient is used which liberates gas during firing causing the surface to bubble and foam. The surface can be solidified at different stages of the melting process causing bubbles or craters after the gas has expired. I am exploring the reinvention of some of my previous glazes to create flowing lava like surfaces. A fine white stoneware clay is used and vessels are vitreous and can function as flower vases but are not suitable for food. The surfaces can be delicate, so extra care needs to be taken.
