Botanicals

In this series, images are a combination of antique botanical drawings and images developed from original photos and scans. Images have links to local flora and fauna and things in my garden. Light washes of water soluble colorants provide subtle backdrops to the images and integrate images with form. I make my own decals using a laser printer with iron oxide in the toner. This remains after the firing to 1300oC and has bonded to the porcelain surface. Pieces are wheel thrown in translucent porcelain with thin walls to allow the capture of light, and glimpses of the images from the inside. The form is kept minimal to highlight the surface pattern.

Tropicals designs are developed from local exotic flowers. Magniflora is an original design developed using tropical flowers with the decals cut and pieced together over the curved surface. This design was inspired by the 100 flower ground design from the Ming dynasty.
